Simona Quiroz Medina (“Mom”), 82, passed away at home in Baytown, Texas on May 18, 2017. Mom was born January 11, 1936 in Melchor Ocampo, Zacatecas, Mexico to Juan Quiroz Delgado and Pascuala Paiz Rodriguez. Pascuala passed away when mom was not yet 2, and was raised by Liborio Martinez Muñoz (“Libo”) & Isabel Quiroz Delgado (“Mama Chavela”) as their own daughter. Mom had so much love for Libo and Mama Chavela and her cousins, who she referred to as her “primos-hermanos”, again with so much love. Although mom loved going to school so much, she had to drop out of elementary school to go to work and help the family make ends meet. Mom had one daughter, Maria Quiroz (“Concha”), and they were inseparable from the day Concha was born to the day Concha passed away. In 1971 Mom married Emilio Medina (“Dad”), and they had one son, Robert Quiroz Medina, the following year. During their marriage they traveled to Mexico every summer and had some great times visiting family and friends there before Dad passed away on October 27, 1983. Mom never dated or remarried anyone after that.
Everyone who knew Mom always said she was a great cook. Only now have I figured out what made her food taste so good – food was how Mom connected with everyone, no matter where they came from or what language they spoke. As our family’s friends came and went over the years, everyone was welcomed with an open door and a smile. If you were hungry, there was a plate of food for you. If you were tired, there was a blanket and a pillow for you to rest for a bit. Mom’s life is an example to me of how easy it is for us all to connect with one another, no matter where you are from.
Mom is survived by one son, Robert Medina; sisters, Maria Quiroz Paiz and prima-hermana Gloria Martinez Quiroz (Mom loved and missed you so much); primos-hermanos, Manuel Martinez Quiroz and Efren Martinez Quiroz; grandsons Robert Santos and Jaime Santos; granddaughter Melissa Isabel Santos; great-grandsons Jaime Santos, Jr., Nicholas Villarreal, Noah Villarreal; great-granddaughters Makayla Villarreal and Brianna Perez; and numerous cousins back in Zacatecas who she adored and missed until the very end.

My mom loved flowers of all kinds, and I am sure would appreciate whatever you bring her. In Mom’s memory, please kindly say hello to the janitors wherever you find them – she was a janitor once, and always smiled and said hello right back. Someone else’s Mom will appreciate you for that. - RM
