Robert Oviedo Martinez, 90, of Baytown, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2023, in Baytown.

Robert was born August 20, 1932 in Baytown, to parents; Marcos Martinez and Reyes Oviedo, and has been a lifelong resident of Baytown.  He was a veteran of the US Army with service during Korea, having enlisted at the age of 17.  During his service he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Korean War Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal-Korea, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea Medal and Ambassador for Peace Medal.   After his service he worked in the building trades and was proficient in roofing and home construction.   He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.  In his younger days, Robert enjoyed playing poker and dominoes with his compadres.  He took pride in the upkeep of his home and was always busy with home projects.  In his retirement years he continued to do handy work around the home and was proficient at piecing together jig saw puzzles, sometimes in friendly competition with his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Martinez was preceded in death by his parents, siblings:  Antonio, Geronimo, Gilberto, Julio, Ana Maria, Maria Ofelia, Joe, and Carmen, and great-grandchild:  Romey Miah Salinas.  He is survived by his wife of 70 years:  Margie Maldonado Martinez, children:  Gloria Steinhauer and husband Michael, Mary Louisa Ybarra and husband Don, Maggie Halleck and husband Mark, Robert J. Martinez and wife Linda, Linda Magdaleno and husband Albert, Ramon Martinez and wife Marta Julia, and Lupe Martinez, 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Robert took great joy in spending time with his grand-children and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with rosary services at 6 p.m., Thursday, at the Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home Chapel.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with interment following at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown.
