Ouida Eugenia Carroll

Ms.Ouida Eugenia Carroll, of Baytown, Texas passed away Thursday, May 23, 2019, at the age of 95.

Ouida was born September 28, 1923 in Baytown, one of four children born to James W. and Lucille Gibbs Carroll at the dawn of the refinery era in Baytown. She remained a lifelong resident, attending primary school there in Baytown, and later earned her Master’s degree in Education from Sam Houston State University. After graduating, she began teaching at Baytown Junior High and eventually became a guidance counselor at Lee High School. She was a dedicated professional who loved her students and took great joy in helping to shape and guide young lives. Later in life, she would marvel at the number of people she encountered in her everyday affairs that were former students, or even children of her former students. 

Ouida was a dedicated, longtime parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she served on the Altar Society, Finance Committee, School Board, and served at Mass as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. She enjoyed serving and supporting the Church, and was always there to lend a hand when the Church or one of it’s parishioners was in need. She was active in Serra International and belonged to the St. Joseph Serra Club. 

Ouida was an active member of the Epsilon Psi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Baytown Area Retired School Employees Association. She loved to socialize with family and friends, and her hobbies included needlework and rooting for her favorite sports teams, including the Houston Astros, and especially the WNBA Houston Comets during their active years in Houston. 

Miss Carroll was preceded in death by her parents: James W. Carroll and Lucile Gibbs Carroll, and her siblings: Helen Carroll Johnson, Lucile Carroll Rice, and James W. Carroll.She is survived by her nieces and nephews: George David Johnson and wife Ai, Ann Thompson and husband Ronnie, Eric Johnson, Kathy King, Debbie Vicknair and husband Bruce, Timothy Carroll and wife Darlene, and Michelle Cressy and husband Louis. She was also the proud great-aunt and great-great-aunt of numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with rosary services at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at the Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baytown with graveside services at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, at Forest park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
