Larry Dewitt Smith, a man completely devoted to God and to his family, passed on to be with the Lord on February 23,2019.
Larry was born December 10, 1956 in Griffin, Georgia, resided in Florida and Alabama while growing up, and was a 40 year resident of Baytown, Texas where he lived until going Home to be with His Lord. He married the love of his life, Melinda Hebert Smith, on Dec. 7, 1991. He loved old cars, especially the ‘57 Ford. Larry was an imaginative and creative person who could rig anything to make it work. For the majority of his life, he worked in automotive parts sales, but more recently drove hotshot deliveries. Larry was a very giving man, who gave help and support to anyone he found who needed it. In death, his giving continued as a Life Gift organ and tissue donor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Landon and Mattie Smith; nephew, Jerrod; and spiritual mentor, Carroll Lansford. Larry leaves behind his wife whom he adored, Melinda; daughter and son-in-love, Gloria and Ryan; son and daughter-in-love, Lee and Aleshia; son, Landon; sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Parker Jenkins, Renea and Mike Dillon, and Deborah and Kleve Smith; his “Sweeties,” (his granddaughters) whom he treasured dearly, Bailee, Marissa and Kenley; too many loving nieces and nephews to name separately but all given the loving nickname, “Squirt;” and many more great-nieces and great-nephews, who were only beginning to enjoy Larry’s dry humor and mischievous nature.
Visitation will be Friday, March 1, 2019, at Highlands Baptist Church, 101 East Canal St., Highlands, TX 77562. The viewing will begin at 10 a.m. with the funeral following at 12:00 p.m. Services will be conducted by Bro. Eddie Norris and Bro. Denny Wells. Pallbearers will be Jason Campbell, Mike Dillon, J.C. Fipps, Brandon Fountain, Parker Jenkins, Travis Jenkins, and Darion Walker.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Highlands Baptist Church in Larry’s memory and spirit of giving (101 East Canal Street, Highlands, TX 77562)
