Joe J. “Pops” Brown, 82, of Baytown, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at his residencesurrounded by his loved ones.
Joe was born January 12, 1939, in Lindale, to Edwin and Beatrice Johnson Brown. He grew up in Lindale with nine siblings, so there were always adventures going on in their house. He was a graduate of Lindale High School class of 1957, attended Texas A&M University, and was a veteran of the US Navy. He met the love of his life on a blind date in October of 1967. Nancy said she knew on that date he was the one she would marry. They married seven months later and were inseparable for 53 years. Joewas a resident of Baytown for 54 years and retired from Exxon as a process supervisor. He was a member and Deacon of Second Baytown where he served for over 35 years. He also enjoyed being a volunteer for the Red Cross. He coached his boys in baseball and football. In addition to supporting his family, he enjoyed golfing, deer hunting, and playing softball well into his senior years. Pops was a handyman and could help anyone with what they needed. He loved spending time with his grandkids and supporting their extra curricular activities. He leaves behind a strong legacy of appreciating the simple things in life, being grateful for all God has given you, treating and serving others with kindness, and loving family unconditionally. This gentle, kind, and Godly man has left an impact on our hearts and will be greatly missed. We are grateful to have known him, loved him, and are blessed to call him Dad and Pops.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Thomas, Robert, John, and Frank Brown, sister, Laverne Woods, brother-in-laws, Doug Woods and James (Hoosey) Granberry, and sister-in-law, Vicky Brown. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Gradick Brown, sons: Keith (Jackie) Brown and Chad (Tara) Brown, brother, Steve (Diane) Brown, sisters: Edwina Granberry, Mary Alice (Fred) Wilkerson, sister-in-law: Carolyn Brown, grandchildren: Ashlyn, Reece, Chase, and Carson, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with funeral services beginning at 1:00 p.m. on January 12, 2022, at the Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home Chapel with interment following at Sterling-White Cemetery in Highlands. In lieu of flowers, the family ask donations be made to the building fund at Second Baytown Church, 6227 North Main.
