James R HelpertSeptember 18, 1940 ~ August 2, 2017 (age 76)
James Helpert, 76, of Baytown, passed away on August 2, 2017. He was born on September 24, 1940, in Bryan, Texas, the only child of Raymond Helpert and Annie Holtman Helpert. The family moved to Marshall, Texas, where Jim spent his childhood school years. While living in Marshall, Jim and his family were actively involved in the Boy Scouts. Upon graduating from Marshall High School in 1959, Jim moved his family to Baytown.
For the next fifty-eight years, he was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He became a member of Knights of Columbus San Jacinto Council #2788 in 1968. In 1979, he became a 4th degree Knight and for over twenty years served as warden for the council. In September 2010, he was awarded an honorary life membership. With his keen memory and sense of duty and loyalty, he remembered facts about the council long forgotten by others. Jim meticulously maintained scrap books of council activities for many years.
Jim retired after twenty-five years in food service for Pasadena Southmore Medical. He remained a close companion and caretaker of his father until Ray’s death in 2008.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Ann Helpert. He is survived by many cousins from both his mother’s and father’s families. He will be missed by his closest cousin and friend, Trudy Meigs and her family.
The family will receive friends at 9 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1907 Carolina, with a rosary recited at 9:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., with Reverend Edmund Eduarte as celebrant.
