Charles Oliver Gardner

Charles O. Gardner, 79, of Mattoon, Illinois passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018. He was born in Sebastopol, Mississippi on January 10, 1939 to his parents, Irvin Oliver Gardner and Edna Earl Hamil Scott.

Charles was a truck driver until 1981. He was self-employed with a cleaning company serving Coles-Moultrie Electric Coop from 1993 to 2013. As a Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiast, he was also a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. Charles was also a devout evangelical Christian.

Mr. Gardner was preceded in death by his father, Irvin Gardner; mother, Edna Scott; brother, George Gardner; and granddaughter, Jessica Youngblood. He is survived by his loving wife, Valta Sue Gardner; Son, David Nick and wife Liz of Mattoon, Il; daughters, Heather Workman and husband David of Baytown, TX, Kim Villarreal and husband Chris of Hurst, TX, Penny Youngblood and husband H.A. of Mattoon, Il, Vickie Rocamontes and husband Rocky of Watauga, TX; Grandchildren Alyssa, Gabriel, Gracie, Isabella, Lexy, Parker, Chris, Cody, Andrew, Aaron, Amanda, Shelby; Great-grandchildren Lucas, Averi, Lillian, Charlee; sister Linda Freeny and husband Tom of Brandon, MS; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Honoring the family as pallbearers will be David Nick, Cody Villarreal, Andrew Rocamontes, Aaron Woods, Thomas Butcher, and Cooper Butcher.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church of Mont Belvieu. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Khanh Ho presiding. Special thanks are given to the First United Methodist Church of Mont Belvieu for graciously allowing Holy Trinity to use their building while construction is being completed.

A memorial service in Mattoon, Illinois will be held on June 16 with the location still to be determined.
